ในขณะที่ศึกษาชุดความรู้สำหรับทำงานเรื่องนรก ผมได้อ่านบทความชื่อว่า วิธีปิดประตู"นรก" โดยหลวงพ่อฤษีลิงดำ และมีความสนใจกับประโยคที่ว่า "ประตูที่จะเปิดเข้าสู่ทางสวรรค์ หรือทางพรหมโลก ทางนิพพานหรือว่าประตูที่จะเข้าถึงศีลและธรรม มีศีลห้า และกรรมบถ ๑๐ เป็นต้น และเขาก็ใช้ประตู ๒ บาน บานที่ ๑ เรียกว่า "หิริ" คือความละอายต่อความชั่ว บานที่ ๒ เรียกว่า "โอตตัปปะ" คือเกรงกลัวผลของความชั่ว" ทำให้ผมสนใจหลักธรรมข้อนี้และพบว่าทางตะวันตกให้ชื่อหลักธรรมนี้ว่า "The Guardians of the World" เป็นการใช้ภาษาที่ทำให้ผมเห็นความเป็นรูปธรรมของหิริและโอตตัปปะ จึงตีความและนำเสนอออกมาในรูปแบบของตัวเอง
